Why I am quietly building my own project management tool

Hand drawn sketches on a workbench under a desk lamp at night, black and white photograph

For the past six months I have been quietly building my own project management tool. Evenings, weekends, a sketchbook full of screens that will never ship. It is not a rebellion against the tools I have used. It is the sum of them.

From Trello I kept the honesty of a board a client can read at a glance. From Jira I kept the discipline of states and ownership, and dropped the ceremony. From Confluence I kept the idea that decisions deserve a home. From the spreadsheet world I kept the rule that updating the thing must be easier than avoiding it.

What I dropped is the noise. The features that exist to justify a pricing tier. The dashboards nobody opens. The notifications that train a team to ignore the tool that sends them.

Building it is the research

I do not know yet whether it becomes a product or stays a very expensive education. Either way, building a tool is the fastest way to learn what a tool actually is, a set of opinions about how people should work together.

Mine has one opinion above all. The client should be able to see the truth of the project without being taught how. Everything else is negotiable.
