Field note: the kickoff question that saves every project

A fountain pen resting on an open notebook beside a window

Every project I have ever rescued had the same hole at the start. Nobody had asked what done actually looks like, and nobody had agreed who gets to say so.

It feels too simple to say out loud in a kickoff. Everyone is keen, the brief is fresh, and asking something that basic can feel like questioning the room. Ask it anyway.

Because three months later, when the work is nearly there and opinions start to diverge, the answer to that question is the only thing that settles the argument without bloodshed.

Write the answer somewhere everyone can see it. That single sentence will save you more money than any tool, template or methodology ever will.
