Who is Marty Neumeier?

Marty Neumeier is the author of The Brand Gap — the book that gave the branding industry its clearest explanation of what a brand actually is. If you've ever heard 'a brand is not a logo', Neumeier is a big reason why.

He's a designer, writer, and brand adviser whose short, sharp books — The Brand Gap, Zag, The Brand Flip — have shaped how a generation thinks about branding.

The Brand Gap

The central idea is simple: there's a gap between business strategy and what customers actually experience, and the brand lives in that gap. Most companies manage one side or the other. Almost nobody manages the space between.

His definition is the one I come back to: a brand is a person's gut feeling about a product, service, or company. Not what you say. What they feel. You can't control it directly — you can only influence it through everything you do.

That's why 'a logo is what people see, a brand is what they feel' isn't just a nice line. It's the whole discipline, compressed into one sentence.

Zag

Zag's argument: when everybody zigs, zag. Differentiation isn't about being slightly better — it's about being the only one doing what you do, for the people you do it for.

For smaller companies and startups, this is the most useful idea in branding. You can't out-spend the big players. You can out-position them. Find the gap they're ignoring and own it.

Most businesses are further ahead than their brand suggests. Zag is about making sure the market can see it.

The Brand Flip

The Brand Flip argues that branding used to be company-led and is now customer-led. Customers build the brand now — through reviews, social media, and word of mouth. Your job is to give them something worth saying.

This is why I ask my three questions from the customer's side of the table. I want to understand it. I want to trust the people behind it. And I want to know it's worth it. Those answers have to be findable, not just true.

Why his thinking matters for your project

Neumeier's work is the strategic foundation under a lot of what I do. When I run a brand project, the questions come from his playbook: what's the gap, what's the zag, what will customers actually feel?

You don't need to read the books to work with me. But knowing the thinking is there — that the work is grounded in something deeper than taste — is part of what you're buying.
