The contractor's toolkit

Working for myself, contracting and running projects for clients, I have used whatever the client needed. ClickUp on one engagement, Monday.com on another, Trello again, and the usual suspects in between. The tool changes. The job does not.

ClickUp wants to be everything, tasks, docs, goals, chat, and rewards the client who commits to it fully. Monday is visual and friendly, good for teams who think in colourful rows. Each one has a logic, and the first week on any engagement is learning that logic before suggesting changes to it.

There is a particular skill in arriving at a client's setup and not flinching. Their board is messy because their business is busy. Tidy it with them, not at them.

What contracting teaches you

Moving between tools keeps you honest about what is universal. Ownership, deadlines, a single place where the current truth lives. Those survive every migration. Everything else is preference and habit.

It also teaches you empathy for the people you ask to change tools. Every switch costs a team two weeks of friction. Make sure the new agreement is worth it.
