Field note: fifteen minutes, standing up

A team standing in a loose circle on studio floorboards

In Leicester we stood in a circle every morning, coffee in hand, fifteen minutes maximum. Three questions each. What did you do, what are you doing, what is in your way.

The standup works because it is short, not because it is clever. The moment it becomes a problem solving session, it dies. Take the problem offline, keep the circle moving.

Standing up is not a gimmick. It is a timer built into your knees. Nobody settles in, nobody opens a laptop, nobody monologues.

If your team dreads the standup, it has stopped being one. It has become a status report with chairs removed.
